The chaotic surroundings of Australia have influenced the approach of Emily Donaldson’s artistic practice. The physicality and simplicity of its nature are echoed within the technique of application in her oil paintings.
Donaldson attempts to capture, whether an everyday scene or a landscape, a fleshy human richness that adds depth and interest to her work. The erratic thick surfaces, give insight into the intuitive application of the paint, and her movement-based process, as it transitions through excessive embellished surfaces.
Her paintings lean away from representation and abstracted forms.
Her paintings are not entirely about achieving a final composition, but also about the process of finding imagery within the paint. The more instinctive approach to the painting, the more fluid and natural the scene feels to the artist. An amiable human approach is key to her philosophy in a world that is becoming more dehumanized and mechanical.
Donaldson’s innovative approach to her practise is extensive, engaging in both sculpture, painting and installation. Building upon surfaces using excessive paint, intuitively embellishing it with thick layers.
